phpFox Development Update (Version 2.0)

phpFox 2 is well under way. We have been focusing most of our time now on this version in hopes to get it ready before the new year. We currently estimate this version will be ready by the first quarter of 2009.

This version is a complete rewrite of the current product we have released. It will also include a new database schema which will allow us to improve in some of the areas we wanted to with our current engine but were unable to because of the limitations brought forward by the database structure. Since the product is being rewritten this has pushed back the release of version 2.0, however we feel this is a vital step for the product and its future.

We will be working closely with 3rd party developers that work on the releasing the top mods found in our community to ensure we are going in the right direction when developing an engine that will be “plug-in” friendly.

At this time I am still unable to release a list of features/changes that will be part of version 2 as we want to hold this information until the first beta release.

If you would like to see a change in the product or a new feature added please feel free to add it to our Feature Request section. We look over all requests and once the beta release is out we will publicly approve requests that have been developed and approved internally.

Version 1.6.x will be the final release for v1.x. We still have developers focusing solely on this version to fix any unforeseen issues that may arise over the next months until version 2.x is fully completed and v1.6.x has passed its end-of-life date.

Upgrading to version 2.x will be using an upgrade script we provide, similar to that of the one we provide with our current version. Since we will be creating a new database table structure all your users information will be automatically imported into the new tables via the upgrade script. The file structure will be similar to that of v1.5.+, so there should not be any extra steps to complete in that part of the upgrade.

phpFox 2 will require PHP 5. As of today we still have the same requirements for MySQL which is 4.1 however this might change over the next few months. Smarty will not be our main template engine and we will instead use our own template engine which supports the common Smarty tags which is what we currently use with v1.5+. So for those developing mods this won’t be much of a change when migrating from v1.x to v.2.

We will continue to release more information as we can regarding the new version over the next few months to keep everyone up-to-date.
